UNITED COLORS AND PALETTES

One of the most useful utility for Webmasters available out there. A file that lets you generate whatever amount of colorful palettes.
You can then pick the colors and pour them in a set of layers.
Then you can drag around the layers and see the different type of matching palettes, by overlapping or siding your layers each other. Fully customizable colors, sources, palettes.
Given the complexity, only generation 5 browsers can use this file.

«It is not love either that has a chief hand in the career of young men, like Julien, who are endowed with a certain degree of talent; these attach themselves with obstinate tenacy to some particular set, and if the set "makes good", all the best things society can give are showered upon them. Woe to the studious man who does not belong to any set; even his minor, doubtful successes will be held against him, and superior virtue will triumph over him by robbing him of these.
Why, my good sir: a novel is a mirror journeying down the high road. Sometimes it reflects to your view the azure blue of heaven, sometimes the mire in the puddles on the road below.»

Click the button named GENERATE. It will populate in a few seconds the big central field (rest assured you're going to notice it!) with a long palette of colors.
Alternatively to arrange the whole palette accordingly to different criteria, you can click at any time one of the buttons under generate: they will rearrange the whole palette in about 3 seconds. You can then scroll the whole palette and by clicking pick you will store in memory its color.

You can then click GET LAYERS: it will make appear a set of as many as 20 layers. You can paint the picked color inside them so that you can build your own palettes and see the effect they make by moving around your layers. All those generated layers are fully draggable by clicking on the button DRAG which is on each of them and then moving your mouse pointer!
Dragging is a bit sluggish on Netscape, but none the less effective if you do not drag in too frantic a way or with too sweeping mouse movements.

All layers have these commands:
  • PAINT: you pour the last picked color in it!
  • MENU OFF: it makes disappear and reappear (toggles!) 90% of the menus so your view and tests won't be trammelled by the clustering options on each layer.
  • DRAG: that's the button you can drag your layer with by clicking on it!
  • PREV COLOR: pours in the previous poured color for this layer.
  • NEXT COLOR: pours in the next (if any) poured color for this layer.
  • HIDE: hides the given layer. To make it visibile back you have to click the global Show Layers button on the general commands (nearby the GET LAYERS button, that is).
  • WIDER: enlarges the layer.
  • SHRINK: shrinks the layer.
  • + STACK: stacks one step above the layer at each click above the other layers around it!
  • - STACK: the opposite of the last above.
  • + B: increases the border of the layer.
  • - B: shrinks the border of the layer.
  • CUSTOM: insert hexadecimal to custom the color to pour
  • PAINT: this last paint button pours only the colour provided in the field above (custom).
The whole hotvamp generates colors only by taking in hexadecimal couples: if you'd want to produce all the possible colors by producing all the combinations you'd generate as many as trillions of biillions!
I therefore assume you agree 100% with me if I limited this option...
Your browsers and my functions can perform very quickly within the limit of about 100,000 combinations but since they also must generate a table to keep these colors in, the generation of this table is very time consuming. The hotvamp defaults to the so called web safe palette, slightly more than 200 colors. You can add hexadecimal couples.
To customize in the very finest details a color, you have to use the custom field.

Click GET LAYERS preferably after you have clicked GENERATE.
Given the space demanding settings when managing a long palette and various layers to paint, this file is probably best managed with a screen resolution as 1024 x 768 or so (right click on empty sector on your desktop, then: properties/settings).
